There can be a tender moment when part of you still wants what is familiar, even after another part of you has decided to live differently. The old ritual may still call. The familiar comfort may still make sense. The part that once reached for relief may not be ready to let go simply because another part of you understands why change matters.

This episode begins by making room for that part.

The Old Way is a Sourel about meeting the part of you that still reaches for what has worked before. Not as a problem to overcome. Not as a failure of willpower. Not as evidence that nothing has changed. But as a part of you that may still be looking for comfort, safety, quiet, relief or ease.

This reflection gently explores why the old way can still feel appealing. It may have softened discomfort. It may have created a sense of reward. It may have helped the body come down at the end of the day. It may have offered a doorway out of loneliness, tiredness, grief, restlessness or too much responsibility.

The need beneath the pattern is not wrong. The need deserves care.

The Part That Still Wants the Old Way invites you to turn towards this inner place with curiosity rather than judgement. Instead of asking why it will not disappear, this Sourel asks something kinder. What is it afraid will happen without the old way. What is it trying to help you avoid. What is it hoping the familiar thing will give you.

This episode is not about giving the old pattern full control. It is about listening closely enough to understand what it has been trying to do for you. Often, parts become louder when they feel ignored. They soften when they feel heard.

It closes with one simple invitation: when the old way calls, pause and notice the part that wants it. Ask what it is trying to do for you. Ask what it needs you to understand. Then offer one small act of care before anything else happens.

Beneath the pull towards the old way, there may be a need that has been waiting a long time to be met with kindness.

The Part That Still Wants the Old Way is part of The Return, an August Sourel series about living more honestly, more gently and more steadily with what is becoming visible now. It is for the tender space where something in you is ready to be met with less shame and more care.

If you find yourself wanting something to return to between these reflections, in the actual moment a habit like this one takes hold, I also built an app called Settle and Source. It offers a ninety second guided practice for exactly the kind of moment this reflection has been describing, the gap between noticing an urge and knowing what to do with it. It is not a replacement for anything here, simply another door, in case it is the right one for you. https://settleandsource.com
